WAITINGROOM（東京）では2016年11月26日（土）から12月25日（日）まで、伊東宣明 個展『アートと芸術家』を開催いたします。当ギャラリーでは初の個展となる伊東は、「身体」「生／死」「精神」といった生きるうえで避ける事のできない根源的なテーマを追求し、映像やインスタレーション作品を発表しているアーティストです。本展では、作者本人の背景に多くの名画やアート鑑賞をする人々などを映し出し、「アートの本質」について自画撮りで語る映像作品《アート》と、[普通の女の子か芸術家か決めかねている]一人の女性が、日本企業の自己啓発的新人研修の方法を用いて芸術家の名言によって作られた「芸術家十則」を絶叫する事により、やがて「芸術家になる」と宣言するまでの過程を、虚実が入り乱れたモキュメンタリー／ドキュメンタリー手法で捉えた映像作品《芸術家》とそのドローイングを主軸に展示いたします。
作家・伊東宣明について
1981年奈良県生まれ、奈良在住。2006年に京都造形芸術大学・映像舞台芸術学科・映像芸術コースを卒業、2016年に京都市立芸術大学大学院・美術研究科博士後期課程修了、博士（美術）学位を取得。近年の主な展覧会に、個展『アート』（愛知県美術館 APMoA Project ARCH、名古屋、2015年）、グループ展『GRAVEDAD CERO』（Matadero Madrid、マドリード・スペイン、2015年）、個展『芸術家と預言者』（HAGISO、東京、2014年）、『牛窓・亜細亜藝術交流祭 - 瀬戸内市美術館』（牛窓シーサイドホール、岡山、2014年）、グループ展『Me’tis -戦う美術-』（京都市立芸術大学ギャラリー@KCUA、京都、2012年)、グループ展『レゾナンス 共鳴 人と響き合うアート』（サントリーミュージアム、大阪、2010年）など国内外多数。
私達は一体「何を」信じて、それをアートと呼んでいるのか？
本展では、「アートとは何か」という問いをめぐる２つの映像作品《アート》と《芸術家》を展示いたします。
《アート》では、全国各地の美術館や野外作品を背景に「アートとは何か」を語る伊東自身の姿が映し出されます。アートの本質はどこにあるのか、理想的なアートの在り方とは何か。承認欲求から制作された作品はすぐに消費されてしまうが、作品を超えた先にある「X」、つまり人間が到達することのできない理想を追い求めることこそが「本当のアート」なのだと伊東は語ります。同時に、淡々とした語りの合間には時折こちらのウケを狙うようにおどけたり声を荒げるシーンも挟み、自撮りの映像を繋ぎ合わせたその様子はまるでSNSに投稿された動画を彷彿とさせ、そこには語りの内容との矛盾が生じていきます。アーティスト自身が撮り撮られる役を演じることで、言葉が次第に現実と虚構の間をさまよっていきます。愛知県美術館での個展で発表されたこの《アート（日本Ver.）》に、スペイン・マドリードでのレジデンスで制作した《アート（スペインVer.）》が加わり、2チャンネル形式で発表されるのは、国内では今回の個展が初めてです。台詞はほとんど変えずに国を変えて、スペインの名画やアートを取り巻く環境などを背景に再度撮影されたスペインバージョンと日本バージョンを並べて同じ空間で同時再生することにより、どちらも被写体はアーティスト自身であるものの、状況により差異がうまれ、「アート」を取り巻く二カ国の状況、さらには歴史をも浮かび上がらせる構造になっています。
《芸術家》は、美大を卒業し、普通の女の子として生きるか芸術家として生きるか決めかねているという一人の女性を主人公に、芸術家の名言によって作られた「芸術家十則」を絶叫する訓練を行うというモキュメンタリー／ドキュメンタリー作品です。日本企業の新人研修の方法になぞらえた、「芸術家十則」を大声で叫びつづけるというコミカルな設定から、実際にその行為を繰り返すうちに、洗脳のように熱を帯びて取り組む女性の姿が描かれます。芸術家とはこうあるべきという指針の繰り返しが、逆説的に「芸術家とは何か」という問いを浮き彫りにしていくと同時に、その反復作業は言葉を少しずつ意味をもたないものにしていきます。しかし最後には達成感を感じたように満足した笑顔で、「芸術家になる」と宣言するまでに至ります。「アート」が先か、「アーティスト」が先か。そして「芸術家とは何か」という問いは「自分は何者なのか」という普遍的な自意識への問いにもつながっていきます。
「身体」「生／死」「精神」といった生きるうえで避ける事のできない根源的なテーマを追求し、表現方法を特定せずに観客にそれらを強く「実感」させる表現方法を採用している、と伊東は言います。伊東はこれまでにも、映像における演じ／演じられる関係性を意図的に利用し、虚実の入り混じる作品を制作してきました。今回発表する２つの作品の描き方も、映し出される行為や言葉の正体がどこにあるのか、画面に映るリアル（現実）のゆがみが、根源的なテーマを実感させ鑑賞者を揺さぶります。映像の虚実性の中で実験的な試みを続ける伊東作品を、この機会に是非ご高覧ください。

Tokyo, Japan - WAITINGROOM is pleased to announce Nobuaki ITOH Solo Exhibiton, A¯to and Artist, from November 26th to December 25th, 2016 and it is the first time to present the artist’s solo exhibition at our gallery. ITOH has been exploring the issue of body, life / death, and spirit, which are not avoidable for human being, and creating video and installation works in this theme. The exhibition will consist of two video works; A¯to (Art), the video consists of short footage, which show the artist himself talking the issue of the “essence of art” in front of masterpieces, artist’s studio, and people who are touring to watch artworks. The other work, Artist, a kind of “Mockumentary” which shows the process of changing the mind of one woman, who had not been able to decide whether she would become an artist or not, but finally stated her will to be an artist. In this video, what changes her mind is a practice of shouting “Ten Statements for an Artist” which consist of remarks by 10 artists, the method of which is based on the new employee trainings of Japanese companies. In this exhibition, there will be two different versions of the work, A¯to (Art), Japan and Spain versions, and Artist along with the related drawings.
About the artist, Nobuaki ITOH
Born in 1981 in Nara, currently lives and works in Nara and Kyoto. He graduated from Kyoto University of Arts and Design in the major of Fine Art in 2006 and obtained a Ph.D. in Art at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2016. His recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition “A¯to” (APMoA Project, ARCH vol.13: Nobuaki ITOH, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Nagoya, 2015), group exhibition “GRAVEDAD CERO” (Matadero Madrid, Madrid, Spain, 2015), solo exhibition “Artist and Prophet” (HAGISO, Tokyo, 2014), “Ushimado Asia Triennale” (Setouchi City Museum of Art, Okayama, 2014), group exhibition “Me’tis - fighting art -“ (Gallery @KCUA, Kyoto, 2012), group exhibition “RESONANSE” (Suntory Museum, Osaka, 2010) and many others.
What on earth do we consider as “art”?
The exhibition will consist of two video works, A¯to (Art), and Artist, which question us “What on earth do we consider as art?”
In the work, A¯to (Art), ITOH himself is projected in front of museums and public artworks around Japan, talking about “the essence of art”. Where is the essence of art? How the ideal art should be? ITOH says in the video that the artwork created from the illimitable desire of recognition can easily be consumed but the “X” beyond the artwork, in other words, to pursue the ideal which human being never can reach is the genuine “essence of art”. In the meantime, he sometimes makes funny faces or weird gestures while he is talking in a detached tone, hence those footages of selfie images are as if the collage of videos posted on SNS so that a contradiction between what he says and his attitude are appearing gradually. As the artist himself acts both roles who shoot and to be shot, his words become wandering between reality and fiction. In addition to this work, A¯to (Japan Ver.), which has been exhibited at Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, there will be another version, A¯to (Spain Ver.), which was shot during his residency in Madrid (Spain), and both will be projected as 2 channel format in the gallery space. Spain version was made with almost the same script and same setup in front of Spanish masterpieces and environment around art, using the same method of the Japanese one. By projecting Spain and Japanese versions together in the same space, even if the object is the artist himself, the contrast is appearing by the circumstances, it illuminates the different situations surround art in both countries, furthermore the different history of them.
The work, Artist, is a kind of “Mockumentary” which shows the process of changing the mind of one woman, who had not been able to decide whether she would become an artist or not, but finally stated her will to be an artist, by practicing to shout “Ten Statements for an Artist” which consist of remarks by 10 artists, the method of which is based on the new employee trainings of Japanese companies. It starts as a comical setting to keep shouting “Ten Statements for an Artist”, but eventually she almost becomes an indoctrinated person, by repeating this attitude over and over again. To repeat the principal of how the artist should be highlights the question of “What is an Artist” paradoxically, and this operation of repetition changes those words to the meaningless ones by degrees. However, she declares that she will be an artist at the end with satisfied smile, feeling like a sense of accomplishment. “Chicken or the egg, Artist or Fine Art”. The question of “Who/What is an Artist?” is being connected to “Who/What am I?” which is an universal question for self-consciousness.

ITOH has been making artworks that the truth/ falsehood or real/fiction are mixed up, by using the relationship between acting and being acted in the video intentionally. The two video works in this exhibition create the distortion of real (reality) in the screen and question where is the true identity of attitude he does and words he says in the video, hence, it makes audience realize his universal theme of spirit about Art and Artist.
